How we plan a Far East trip
We start with how much moving you want to do. Two bases in nine nights makes a relaxed holiday; four makes a logistics exercise. From there we build the route, name the hotels, and price the whole thing once — flights, rooms, transfers, entries and insurance in a single costing.
Then we take on the parts that go wrong quietly: the visa file and its timing, the bookings that sell out months ahead, the food you will want near your hotel, and a plan B for the days that depend on weather.
Trip facts
Where people go, and why
Singapore and Bali
Four nights of city and theme parks, five of beach and rice terraces.
Thailand
Bangkok, Chiang Mai and an island. Ten nights covers all three comfortably.
Vietnam
Hanoi, Halong Bay and Hoi An, with domestic flights between them.
Japan
Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakone with a rail pass. The most rewarding trip in the region.
When to go
There is rarely one right month. There is a right month for the trip you want.
Best for most
Dry season across Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.
Hot
Fine for Singapore and Bali; heavy going inland.
Monsoon, mostly
Bali stays dry. Japan is green and humid, with fireworks festivals.
Japan
Cherry blossom and autumn colour. Book six months ahead.
